About me

Sachiko Hara was born in Kanagawa, Japan. She studied German at Sophia University Tokyo and began working in Japan as an actress in 1984, including as a member of the avant-garde theatre group Romantica.

In 1999 she met Christoph Schlingensief, who engaged her for his project “Deutschlandsuche,” and she continued to work with him regularly. Her first major role in Germany was Polly in Brecht’s Threepenny Opera directed by Nicolas Stemann.

From 2004 to 2009 she was a member of the ensemble at the Burgtheater Vienna, where she also worked with Christoph Schlingensief, Nicolas Stemann, René Pollesch, Sebastian Hartmann, and Lars-Ole Walburg.

In 2009 she joined Schauspiel Hannover. In 2011/2012 she moved to Schauspiel Köln, where she was part of the ensemble from 2011 to 2013.

From the 2013/14 season onward she became a permanent ensemble member at Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, working with Christoph Marthaler, Karin Henkel, Katie Mitchell, Bonn Park, René Pollesch and others. Her time in Hamburg was interrupted by a permanent engagement at Schauspielhaus Zürich in the 2019/2020 season. After Zurich, she returned to Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg in 2020.

Alongside her acting work, Sachiko Hara is active as a translator. She translated Little Boy – Big Taifoon by Hisashi Inoue and Rocco Darsow by René Pollesch.

With her project “Hiroshima-Salon,” in which she speaks about her home country Japan, she appears in various cities. In Japan she gives workshops and lectures on the German theatre landscape and reads German plays. As the only Japanese actress permanently engaged at theatres in Germany, she conveys insights into German theatre practice.

Since 2025, Sachiko has increasingly dedicated herself to screen work and is represented by Mulholland Talent Management.
